Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said in a speech in Congress on Tuesday that the central bank does not need to rush to cut interest rates further. On the remarks, the rate-sensitive Nasdaq failed to turn around on Tuesday, and stayed feeble throughout the day, closing 70 points or 0.4% lower at 19,643. The S&P 500 closed slightly higher by 2 points at 6,068, while the DJIA closed higher by 123 points or 0.3% at 44,593.
Apple (AAPL.US) surged 2.2% after the company reportedly partnered with Alibaba (BABA.US) to develop AI features for Chinese iPhone users. Chip maker Intel (INTC.US) rallied 6.1%, while Meta (META.US) rose 0.3% after a successful 17-day rally.
Tesla (TSLA.US) dented the Nasdaq, slipping 6.3% at close, down for five trading days. Nvidia (NVDA.US) also dropped 0.6%.
As for stocks which had released results, Marriott (MAR.US) dived 5% after it forecast a dismal 2025 results for hotels in Greater China, with net room growth slowing and its 2025 profit forecast falling short of market expectations.
